Students who have mastered the fundamentals of chess such as piece position, how to begin a game properly, how to complete a checkmate, and how to castle, etc. are ready to enter the Advanced Class and begin the process of becoming a United States Chess Federation rated tournament player. Students must register a membership with the USCF, which is an annual fee of $20 for students. Once registered, the student will receive an initial rating by the USCF that will raise or lower as the chess student wins or loses chess tournament rounds. One opportunity to raise a student's rating is to participate within local and regional tournaments. At the end of each scholastic year, the Holland Chess Academy hosts the Holland Junior Open rated chess tournament. Likewise, we may have period day-trips to locations where rated scholastic tournaments take place. The State of Michigan also hosts the Michigan Open where all Michigan chess players, scholastic and adults, are invited to play.
If your student is ready, register him or her with the United States Chess Federation. Go to Join US Chess | US Chess.org
Each semester includes three months membership with ChessKid. However, we recommend that you continue your student's membership between scholastic semesters to help maintain or even improve your student's proficiency with the art of chess. Go to Upgrade to Gold Membership - ChessKid.com
Beginning students need to know nothing about chess but display an eagerness to learn. The beginner's class is open to students as young as age 5 as long as they can pay attention and self-manage during the 90-minute class session. Likewise, 18-year-old students are also welcome, and all ages in between. Within a matter of a few weeks, beginners will be able to play through an entire game of chess. Although, they have a lot of chess theory ahead of them to learn. Students who persevere through five or more years with our program will likely earn titles such as: Class A, or Chess Expert status with the USCF, if not higher titles like US Chess Master, International Master, or ultimately, Grand Master.
