Chess Tournaments Categories:

HollandChess.com is committed to teaching your student to play competitive chess with excellence. To support your child's development, we strongly encourage participation in scholastic and rated chess tournaments. HollandChess.com staff will notify our students of torunaments that we highly recommend.

  • USCF Nationally Rated - Students of chess who are serious about the sport and compete regularly, will maintain a USCF Membership. USCF membership cost $16 per-year for scholastic juniors. The membership enables the chess player to obtain a national ranking score that is used to better place the player against appropriate competitors. Most rated tournaments require players to have USCF memberships. Ranking categories include: (Novice: 0-999; E-Class: 1000-1199; D-Class: 1200-1399; C-Class: 1400-1599; B-Class: 1600-1799; A-Class: 1800-1999; Chess Expert: 2000-2199; Chess Master: 2200+).
  • Michigan Chess Association Rated - Some tournaments within Michigan may require a Michigan Chess Association (MCA) Membership. The MCA provides a monthly newsletter that not only helps players keep-up with scholastic and adult players within Michigan, but it also provides puzzles and articles helpful for player development. MCA memberships start at $10 per-year for juniors, without a newsletter subscription, and $15 per-year with the subscription.
  • Non-Rated Fun Tournaments - Many tournaments offer a non-rated fun tournament option for beginning chess competitors. Such tournaments do not require USCF or MCA memberships, but they also DO NOT track participant's ratings. Within West Michigan, Calvin College offers a scholastic tournament on the first Saturday of each month. We are also negotiating with the director of the monthly Aquinas tournament to add a scholastic tournament section. For West Michigan tournament information, CLICK HERE.
