1.) What is the tuition cost for HollandChess.com? Why do you charge a fee?
Our current cost is $25 per student per semester. Optional additional fees include $10 for HollandChess.com club t-shirts, and various moderate fees associated with chess students participating in regional and national USCF chess tournaments.
2.) If I have registered my child for the first semester of chess training, do I need to register him or her again for the second semester? Is online registration and online PayPal payments safe and secure?
Yes, you will need to register your student for each semester using our online registration system. Our registration system helps us to better manage our non-profit finances as well as maintain proper records regarding student and parent contact information. Your cooperation with our online registration system is greatly appreciated. In addition, online registration is safe and secure.
3.) Can I pay for tuition using cash or check?
If you do not have credit cards, debit cards or a PayPal account, we will consider tution payment via check or cash on a limited case-by-case basis. Please understand that cash and check transactions are not nearly as safe as our secure online payment system. In addition, when our staff handles cash or checks for payments, they run the risk of human-error and loss. We want to avoid these human-error problems. We have invested time and money to provide our clients with a safe and easy means of paying for tuition and club shirts, and we ask that our clients make every effort to use the systems in place. If this is not possible, please call David Posthuma at 1-616-283-7703 to discuss alternate payment options.
The only case where cash or checks are accepted as the standard form of payment, is when our club members compete in regional chess tournaments...Our staff may collect the tournament fees from each player's guardian prior to tournament registration in order to speed-up the registration and payment process.
4.) Why does HollandChess.com place such a heavy emphasis upon my child being involved in competative chess tournaments?
We greatly value competative chess tournaments, and believe our students should make every effort to participate in tournament opportunities. The reason for this value includes: 1) Your student will meet other children throughout West Michigan who share their passion for chess and be able to build valuable friendships; 2) In the same way your child's school offers tests to assess skill development, chess tournaments provide a real-life assessment of a student's skill development; 3) Many students are greatly motivated by healthy competition and the ability to win trophies and other prizes; 4) National rankings by the United States Chess Federation provides a real-time guage of a student's skill development and helps properly match chess players so that students do not play others with greater skill and then continually lose matches which will sadly result in discouragement, or play chess companions who possess lesser skill resulting in the student becoming inappropriately prideful as they repeatedly win against lesser skilled opponents.
